Jammu is taking a giant leap toward becoming a key destination for adventure seekers, with a renewed focus on paragliding. The Directorate of Tourism, Jammu, recently concluded a six-day paragliding refresher course at Aithem View Point on the Jammu-Surinsar Road, conducted in collaboration with the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS), Manali. The initiative reflects the region’s growing ambition to establish itself as a paragliding and eco-tourism hub.

Training for Safety and Skill Development

The refresher course, held from October 8 to 13, 2025, brought together trained pilots and tourism personnel to enhance their technical knowledge and safety standards. Expert instructors from ABVIMAS led the sessions, which included comprehensive training on paragliding safety, flight operations, meteorology, and emergency procedures. Participants also gained insights into equipment maintenance and weather assessment to ensure safer flying conditions.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Aijaz Qaiser, Joint Director of Tourism Jammu, highlighted the importance of the course, calling it a crucial step in raising the bar for adventure tourism. He emphasized that such programs will be held regularly to ensure the development of skilled manpower and to promote Jammu as a leading destination for adventure and eco-based travel.

Expanding Adventure Tourism in Jammu

The Directorate of Tourism, under the guidance of Additional Chief Secretary Ashish Chandra Verma and Director of Tourism Vikas Gupta, is working to expand adventure sports across the region. Areas like Aithem, Surinsar, and Sanasar have been identified as ideal sites for paragliding due to their scenic landscapes and favourable wind conditions.

The refresher course also aligns with the department’s broader mission to encourage safe, responsible, and sustainable adventure experiences. With more initiatives in the pipeline, Jammu is expected to see increased participation from both local and international adventure enthusiasts in the coming years.

Event Highlights and Future Vision

The closing ceremony featured paragliding demonstrations, interactive sessions, and certificate distributions. The event saw active participation from trained pilots, tourism officers, and adventure professionals, reflecting the growing enthusiasm for this sport in the region.

Deputy Director of Tourism (Adventure) Savita Chouhan and Assistant Director of Tourism Vishal Sadhotra supervised the event, along with a dedicated team that ensured smooth execution of all activities.

With this successful program, Jammu is not only nurturing local talent but also building the foundation for a safe, skill-based adventure ecosystem. The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to making the region synonymous with high-quality adventure tourism.
