Indian Railways is set to take spiritual tourism to new heights with its latest offering, the Dakshin Darshan Yatra. Operated under the Bharat Gaurav Tourist Train initiative, this 9-night, 10-day pilgrimage invites devotees to explore the divine beauty and heritage of South India. Starting from Tirupati, the train journey unfolds across some of the most iconic temple towns in India — including Rameswaram, Madurai, Kanyakumari, and Thiruvananthapuram — offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience for religious travellers.
A spiritual journey through South India
The yatra begins in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, home to the revered Venkateswara Swamy Temple, one of India’s most visited pilgrimage sites. Travellers can also visit the nearby Padmavati Temple, known for its tranquil surroundings and devotion-filled atmosphere.
From Tirupati, the train heads to Rameswaram, one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage destinations. Here, devotees visit the grand Ramanathaswamy Temple, famous for its endless corridors, sculpted pillars, and deep spiritual significance. The tour also covers Dhanushkodi, a fascinating ghost town that offers both history and mystique along the southern coast.
The next stop is Madurai, Tamil Nadu’s temple city, where the spectacular Meenakshi Amman Temple stands as an architectural marvel. The towering gopurams and intricate carvings of this temple showcase the magnificence of Dravidian craftsmanship.
As the journey continues, the train reaches Kanyakumari — India’s southernmost tip. Travellers experience the serene energy of the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the Gandhi Mandapam, where the three seas — the Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea, and Indian Ocean — meet. The nearby Kanyakumari Temple adds a divine touch to the scenic beauty.
The final leg of the journey takes passengers to Thiruvananthapuram, where the iconic Padmanabhaswamy Temple awaits. Known for its architectural splendour and legendary treasures, it serves as a fitting finale to the Dakshin Darshan Yatra. The trip concludes with a peaceful visit to Kovalam Beach, where devotees can unwind and reflect on their spiritual adventure.
