On July 5, 2025, Shanghai unveiled the world’s largest Legoland Resort, adding a vibrant new chapter to China’s booming family tourism sector. Spread across an enormous 318,000 square metres in Fengjing Town in the city’s Jinshan district, the resort is the first of its kind in China and is already being hailed as one of the most immersive theme parks anywhere in the world. This massive investment, built in collaboration with UK based Merlin Entertainments and the local government, marks a USD 550 million strategic effort to turn Shanghai into a global hub for family friendly travel.

The Legoland Resort is a marvel of colour, creativity, and cutting edge technology. Constructed with over 85 million Lego bricks, the park is divided into eight interactive zones, each themed around popular Lego franchises such as Lego City, Ninjago, Lego Friends, Monkie Kid, and Lego Castle. The centrepiece is “Miniland,” where iconic Chinese landmarks such as the Temple of Heaven and the Bund are recreated using over 20 million bricks. The intricate work took more than 168,000 labour hours, and the result is a dazzling showcase of miniature architectural excellence.

Innovation plays a big role in this new age theme park. One of the major highlights is the introduction of AI powered Lego Minifigures that can talk and respond to guests in real time. This kind of immersive interaction is a first for any Legoland in the world and is expected to delight young visitors and adults alike. At the entrance, guests are welcomed by a towering 26 metre Lego sculpture named “Dada,” symbolising creativity and imagination.

Adding to the list of world firsts, the park features the first ever Lego themed boat ride through a stylised Chinese water town. This attraction combines traditional culture with Lego’s playful design language, offering guests a unique cultural crossover. A 60 meter tall observation tower provides panoramic views of the sprawling resort, while thrill seekers can enjoy adrenaline rides like the “Mega Lego Coaster.” In Creative World, visitors can meet the biggest Lego Minifigure ever made.

True to its resort name, the park also features a full fledged accommodation experience through the Legoland Hotel. With 250 Lego themed rooms, character interactions, and kid focused amenities, the hotel extends the fantasy beyond park hours. Dining and shopping options are abundant, with six restaurants, ten food kiosks, and several retail outlets that sell exclusive Lego merchandise and souvenirs.

The opening of the Shanghai Legoland Resort is expected to significantly boost the city's tourist economy. Projected to attract over 2.4 million visitors annually, it will now stand alongside other major attractions in the city, including Shanghai Disneyland and Haichang Ocean Park. Despite launching during peak summer heat, the park’s opening day saw thousands of families lining up in the sun to be among the first to explore the resort. The reception was overwhelmingly positive, with visitors praising the high level of detail, storytelling, and interactivity.

Shanghai’s entrance into the Legoland network is only the beginning. Merlin Entertainments has announced further plans to open similar parks in other Chinese cities including Shenzhen, Beijing, and locations in Sichuan. With each new development, the company aims to tap into China’s growing appetite for themed entertainment and cultural experiences.

For families planning an international getaway, the Shanghai Legoland Resort offers a new kind of adventure that blends familiar fun with high tech innovation and rich cultural storytelling. Whether you are a Lego fan, a theme park enthusiast, or a curious traveller, this resort is designed to be a full sensory experience where imagination takes the lead.
