The United States has updated its travel advisory for India, placing the country under a Level Two alert that calls for increased caution, particularly for women travelling alone. The advisory, released by the US State Department on June sixteen, reflects growing concerns about safety risks including crime and terrorism across several regions in India. It also outlines restrictions for US government personnel and offers strong cautionary advice for American citizens planning to visit the country.

According to the advisory, violent crimes such as rape are reportedly among the fastest growing in India, and incidents have occurred even at popular tourist spots and public spaces. The State Department also highlighted the risk of terrorist attacks, especially in crowded areas like transport hubs, markets, government buildings, and malls. These potential threats are considered unpredictable and can occur without any prior warning.

In light of these risks, the US government has informed citizens that emergency assistance may be limited in rural or remote parts of India. This includes regions from eastern Maharashtra through northern Telangana and into parts of West Bengal. Travel restrictions are in place for US government employees in several states, and any travel outside the capital cities in areas like Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Meghalaya, and parts of Madhya Pradesh requires prior approval.

The advisory singles out Jammu and Kashmir and regions near the India Pakistan border as areas of heightened security risk. Similarly, American citizens are advised to avoid travelling to Manipur and other northeastern states that are currently experiencing unrest and conflict related disruptions.

One of the most direct warnings in the advisory is for women travelling solo in India. The document clearly states that women should not travel alone due to the ongoing threat of gender based violence. This message reflects long standing concerns among international travellers and underscores the importance of prioritising personal safety when planning trips.

In addition to safety warnings, the advisory reminds travellers that satellite phones and GPS devices are prohibited under Indian law. Tourists found using these tools could face heavy fines or even imprisonment, making it essential to be informed about local regulations before arrival.

The US government has also advised against using land crossings near the India Nepal border, where there have been incidents involving immigration related detentions and penalties. These crossings, while frequently used by travellers, have become more closely monitored due to concerns over documentation and border security.

While India remains a popular destination with its rich culture, diverse landscapes, and historic landmarks, the updated advisory suggests that travellers need to exercise greater awareness and preparation. Solo travellers, especially women, are encouraged to make detailed plans, stay informed about regional conditions, and avoid high risk zones altogether.
