Malaysia has extended its 30-day visa-free entry for Indian tourists until December 31, 2026, making it one of the most accessible Southeast Asian destinations for travellers from India. However, recent incidents at Kuala Lumpur International Airport reveal that visa-free entry does not guarantee hassle-free travel. Several Indian nationals have been denied entry and placed on immediate return flights for failing to meet strict immigration requirements.
The visa-free facility is strictly for tourism and casual visits. It cannot be used for employment, internships, long-term stays, or studies. Immigration officers at Kuala Lumpur International Airport have been conducting targeted screenings, and any traveller whose documents are incomplete or whose purpose of visit appears unclear risks being refused entry.
The High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur has advised that Indian travellers must arrive fully prepared. This means carrying a passport valid for at least six months beyond the arrival date, a confirmed return or onward ticket within 30 days, proof of accommodation, and verifiable evidence of sufficient funds to cover the stay. Recent advisories suggest carrying bank statements showing a balance of at least ₹40,000 to ₹50,000.
Another crucial requirement is the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC), introduced in January 2024. This online form must be completed within three days before arrival through Malaysia’s official immigration website. Authorities have also warned against fake MDAC websites that charge unnecessary fees. Without a completed MDAC, travellers can be issued a Not to Land order, confined to the airport transit area, and sent back to India at their own expense.
Despite these strict checks, Malaysia continues to attract Indian tourists in record numbers. Between January and November 2024, more than one million Indian travellers visited the country, a sharp increase from the previous year. The appeal lies in its mix of modern cities, stunning beaches, rich culture, and vibrant food scene.
For those planning a trip, the message is clear “visa-free” does not mean “document-free.” Being fully prepared will ensure a smooth arrival and let you focus on enjoying everything Malaysia has to offer without unexpected airport setbacks.
