The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are about to offer one of India’s most unique travel experiences. Beginning October 24, a new cruise service operated by the Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS) will take travellers from Port Blair to Barren Island, giving them the opportunity to witness India’s only active volcano up close. This move marks a major boost for tourism in the region, adding another jewel to Andaman’s already vibrant travel offerings.

The Andaman Cruise Experience

The new cruise will set sail every Friday at 9 pm from Haddo Wharf in Port Blair and reach near Barren Island early the next morning. As the ship anchors close to the volcanic island, passengers will be treated to an extraordinary view of smoke rising from the crater, surrounded by crystal-clear waters and dark volcanic rocks. The ship will then begin its return journey at 8 am, docking back at Port Blair by 4 pm the same day — making it the perfect weekend getaway for adventure seekers.

Ticket Prices and Facilities

Bookings for this special voyage can be made through the DSS e-ticketing system. The cruise offers a range of ticket options designed for different budgets and comfort levels. Coral Suite cabins (2 beds) are priced at ₹8,310 per person, while Reef Suites (4 beds) cost ₹6,340 per person. The Island Breeze section with 6 beds is priced at ₹4,290 or ₹3,180 per person, and the Dormitory Lagoon, accommodating up to 24 passengers, is available for ₹2,000 per person.

Each ticket includes snacks, breakfast, lunch, high tea, and evening refreshments, ensuring that travellers enjoy a complete and comfortable experience. Passengers can also purchase additional meal coupons onboard.

Exploring Barren Island

Located about 135 kilometres northeast of Port Blair, Barren Island is one of the most fascinating natural wonders in India. Though largely submerged, its visible upper cone stands 353 metres above sea level. The volcano has erupted multiple times since 1787, with the most recent activity recorded just weeks ago in 2025.

The island is uninhabited and part of a volcanic chain extending from Sumatra to Myanmar. The contrast between its fiery crater and surrounding turquoise waters makes it a captivating destination for photographers, adventurers, and nature enthusiasts.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to take this cruise is between October and March, when the weather in the Andaman Sea is calm, making for smooth sailing and excellent visibility. This period also offers ideal conditions for scuba diving and snorkelling near Barren Island, where marine life thrives around the volcanic formations.

The launch of this cruise service brings travellers closer to one of India’s rare geological treasures, transforming a distant natural marvel into an accessible, unforgettable experience.
