Involvement of Leading Hospitality Brands

Several top hospitality brands, including Leela Hotels, Taj Group, Neemrana Group, Mahindra Hotels and Resorts, Oberoi Hotels, Hyatt Regency, and Lalit Hotels, have shown interest in developing and managing these heritage properties. This collaboration ensures that the transformation of these sites will meet high standards of luxury and comfort.

Focus on Experiential Tourism

Mukesh Kumar Mesharam, Principal Secretary of the Department of Tourism and Culture, highlighted the recent growth in tourism in Uttar Pradesh. The state is focusing on developing infrastructure and facilities to cater to tourists from all economic backgrounds. Discussions with prominent hotel groups aim to revitalise historic palaces and havelis under the new tourism policy, following a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

Investment and Incentives

The state's tourism policy requires a minimum investment ranging from INR 30 crores to INR 100 crores for transforming heritage properties into hotels. Depending on the investment level, these buildings will be categorized, and investors will receive various incentives and concessions.

Key Sites for Transformation

In the first phase, several iconic sites are targeted for transformation, including:

  • Chunar Fort in Mirzapur
  • Barua Sagar Fort in Jhansi
  • Jal Mahal in Barsana
  • Chattar Manzil and Kothi Roshan-ud-Daula in Kanpur
  • Shukla Talab Haveli in Kanpur

After government approval, the project will expand to include other notable sites like Mastani Mahal and Lake Palace in Mahoba, Tehroli in Jhansi, and TalBehat Fort in Lalitpur.

Extending Beyond Forts and Palaces

The program also plans to convert other historical buildings, including those at Akbar’s hunting ground in Kirawali, Agra, and Baradari in Bithoor. In Lucknow, sites like Kothi Gulista-e-Iram, Kothi Darshan Vilas, and Baradari in Wazirganj, Gonda, are slated for conversion.

Comprehensive Cultural Experience

These heritage hotels will offer more than just luxurious accommodations. Guests can expect wellness centers, museums, heritage restaurants, and thematic parks, providing a complete cultural experience. This project is also expected to create significant employment opportunities within the state.
