In a move that promises to transform travel in Puri district, the Odisha government has approved the Pipili to Konark Greenfield Corridor. The new 40-kilometre highway will reduce the journey between Pipili and Konark from one hour and thirty minutes to just 30 minutes. This development is expected to benefit tourists, daily commuters, and local businesses by offering faster and safer access to key destinations in the region.
The approval for the corridor came during a high-level meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida. The session focused on improving regional connectivity and was attended by Law, Works, and Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan. The plan already has preliminary design work underway, ensuring that construction can begin without delay.
Faster Travel Across Coastal Odisha
The corridor will be designed as a four-lane expressway with a width of approximately 200 feet, allowing smooth travel at speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour. Alongside the new highway, the existing Pipili to Konark road will be widened from seven to ten metres. This combination of new and upgraded roads will reduce congestion, especially during peak tourist seasons, while providing easier access to the iconic Konark Sun Temple.
Tourists visiting Konark and Puri will also benefit from shorter travel times, making day trips and sightseeing more convenient. The project is expected to strengthen the overall connectivity of the region, encouraging more visitors to explore the coastal attractions of Odisha.
Upgrades Across Puri District
The meeting also outlined road improvement plans across Puri town. Key stretches under consideration include the road connecting Taj International to Jagannath Stadium, which is set to become a four-lane thoroughfare. Other important routes, such as Chaitanya Road to Balisahi, the approach to Jagannath Temple via Dolamandap Sahi, and Jhadeshwari Club to Medical Chhak, are scheduled for surveys and potential upgrades to improve local traffic flow.
Further south in the Nimapara constituency, two new four-lane roads are being planned. One will connect Charichhak to Astarang, while the other will run between Jalarpur and Charichhak. These projects aim to ease local travel, support regional development, and prepare for future growth in the area.
Benefits for Tourists and Locals
The corridor and related road upgrades will not only reduce travel times but also improve safety, ease festival and seasonal congestion, and make historic and religious sites more accessible. Daily commuters will enjoy smoother journeys, while tourists can plan trips with greater confidence knowing that travel between Pipili and Konark will be faster and more reliable.
The Odisha government is expected to announce detailed timelines for construction soon. Once completed, the corridor is poised to become a key transport artery, boosting tourism and enhancing connectivity across the region.
