Forecast and Warnings
The district administration has forecast very heavy rains from May 18 to 20. District Collector M. Aruna announced that the India Meteorological Department has issued an "orange alert" for the Nilgiris, predicting heavy rain between 6 cm and 20 cm during these days.

Safety Measures in Place
Following a meeting with officials from the Revenue, Police, and Fire and Rescue Services departments, the District Collector emphasized the importance of safety for visitors. Nearly 3,500 disaster response personnel and necessary equipment, such as earthmovers, are ready for deployment. About 450 temporary shelters have been set up, and residents are advised to stay indoors.
Increased Rainfall Across Tamil Nadu
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has warned of increased rainfall across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal over the next five days. The forecast includes light to moderate rain in many areas, with some places experiencing heavy to very heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.
Districts Affected
Several districts, including Theni, Dindigul, Tenkasi, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Pudukottai, and Ramanathapuram, are expected to see heavy to very heavy rain. Other districts, such as Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Madurai, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, and Thoothukudi, will also experience heavy rainfall.

For Chennai and surrounding areas, the forecast predicts generally or partly cloudy skies from May 17 to 23. Moderate rain, thunderstorms, and lightning are expected in certain areas during this period. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and take necessary precautions.
