Kolkata is gearing up for a major upgrade to its metro network as the long-awaited Yellow Line has received final safety clearance. This new stretch will link Kolkata International Airport, also known as Jai Hind Bimanbandar, to Noapara via Dum Dum Cantonment, giving the city its first direct metro connection to the airport.
The clearance came after a detailed inspection by Sumeet Singhal, Commissioner of Railway Safety for the Northern Frontier Circle, on August 16. The inspection involved careful checks of the tracks, trains, and emergency systems, as well as a trolley inspection and a successful speed trial between the airport and Noapara. Senior metro officials, including Principal Chief Engineer Anuj Mittal, were present during the inspection, which concluded with the CRS expressing full satisfaction with the readiness of the line.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Yellow Line on August 22, along with two other new routes the Green Line from Esplanade to Sealdah and the Orange Line from Ruby to Beliaghata. These additions mark a significant step forward in strengthening Kolkata’s public transport system and easing congestion across the city. The Prime Minister is also expected to hold a rally in Dum Dum on the same day following the inauguration.
The opening of the Yellow Line is expected to greatly benefit travellers by providing a seamless connection between the city and the airport, reducing dependence on road transport and cutting travel time. It also adds a new chapter to the city’s expanding metro network, which has been steadily evolving to meet the needs of its growing population.
With all formal clearances now secured, the Noapara to Jai Hind Bimanbandar stretch is ready for commissioning, marking a proud milestone for Kolkata. As the countdown begins to the grand inauguration, the excitement among commuters and city planners is palpable.
