Kerala is gearing up to take flight with a unique travel experience as the long-discussed seaplane service is finally ready for launch. Starting next month, the first routes will connect Kochi International Airport to the Lakshadweep islands, giving travellers a faster and more exciting way to reach these pristine shores. The service will be operated by Spice Shuttle, a subsidiary of SpiceJet, and is already generating huge buzz among both tourists and locals.
The fleet will consist of modern 20 seater aircraft built by Canadian manufacturer De Havilland. These planes are designed for smooth landings and takeoffs from water, requiring only two meters of depth and about 800 meters of water runway. Successful trials have already been conducted, including a test flight from Kochi to Mattupetty Dam in Munnar last year, proving that the system is ready to operate on a larger scale.
One of the biggest advantages for travellers is the pricing structure. A direct ticket to Lakshadweep is expected to cost around Rs 12,000. However, thanks to the government’s UDAN regional connectivity scheme, passengers could enjoy subsidies of Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000 per seat. This means nearly half of the seats on every flight will be available at subsidised rates, making the service more affordable and accessible for a wider range of travellers.
Expansion plans are already in motion. Beyond the Kochi to Lakshadweep route, officials have announced that future destinations may include Bolgatty, Idukki Dam, and Wayanad Lake. These picturesque locations will not only give tourists breathtaking views from above but also strengthen Kerala’s position as one of India’s most innovative and tourist friendly states. Waterdomes near key lakes and dams across Kerala are also being developed to support seaplane operations in the coming years.
The move is expected to transform regional connectivity and offer travellers an unforgettable aerial journey. While helicopter services to some destinations remain prohibitively expensive, the seaplane service promises to bring the same thrill at a fraction of the cost.
With the launch just weeks away, Kerala is all set to add another jewel to its tourism crown. From lush backwaters to mountain lakes, travellers will soon have a chance to experience God’s Own Country from a stunning new perspective.
