The Indian passport is opening more doors than ever before. In the latest Henley Passport Index 2025, India has improved its global standing, rising from 85th to 77th place. This upward shift means Indian citizens can now travel to 59 countries without applying for a visa in advance. The jump may appear modest in terms of additional countries, but it signals stronger diplomatic ties and growing global acceptance of Indian travelers.

Among the 59 destinations, Indian travelers can enter 30 countries without a visa and access another 28 with visa-on-arrival facilities. Popular travel hotspots like Malaysia, Thailand, Maldives, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka have made it easier for Indian passport holders to plan quick getaways. For nature lovers, adventure seekers, or even those planning long weekends, this change comes as a major relief.

One additional destination, Seychelles, offers an Electronic Travel Authority that allows short visits without a traditional visa, adding more flexibility for Indian tourists. However, while this development is encouraging, travelers are still advised to check the latest rules with official government sources before finalizing travel plans.

In global rankings, Singapore has maintained its top position with access to 193 destinations. It is closely followed by Japan and South Korea. Meanwhile, European countries like France, Germany, Italy, and Spain continue to dominate the top five spots. New Zealand, Switzerland, and Greece also enjoy high global mobility scores.

On the other end, countries like Afghanistan remain at the bottom with access to only a handful of destinations. Interestingly, Saudi Arabia made notable progress this year by adding four more destinations to its list, bringing its total to 91.

Despite India’s rise in the rankings, the journey is far from over. Countries like China have shown that consistent diplomatic efforts can lead to major gains. China has moved up from 94th place in 2015 to 60th today. India’s current momentum could signal a similar trajectory if policies and global partnerships continue to strengthen.

The Henley Passport Index evaluates nations based on how many destinations their passport holders can access without a prior visa. It is considered one of the most reliable indicators of global mobility and passport power. As India continues to grow economically and diplomatically, a stronger passport ranking is both a reflection of progress and a motivator for further engagement on the global stage.

Whether you are planning a tropical vacation, a cultural retreat, or a quick international escape, the 2025 Henley Passport Index gives Indian citizens more travel freedom than before. It is a reminder of how far the country has come and how much further it can go in terms of global access.
