A New Chapter in Sustainable Tourism

Nestled in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district, the historic village of Garbyang has received a new eco tent homestay developed by the Indian Army under Operation Sadbhavna. The initiative, inaugurated on October 6, 2025, aims to strengthen community-based tourism, generate local employment, and preserve the region’s natural and cultural heritage.

Garbyang, known for its stunning Himalayan landscapes and Indo-Tibetan trade legacy, offers travelers an opportunity to experience a rare combination of history, culture, and nature. The launch of this eco homestay marks a meaningful step towards promoting responsible tourism in India’s border regions while ensuring that the benefits reach local residents directly.

Operation Sadbhavna and Community Empowerment

Operation Sadbhavna is one of the Indian Army’s longest-running goodwill missions, focused on supporting infrastructure, education, and social development in remote border areas. The Garbyang tent homestay aligns with this mission by blending military initiative with local participation.

While the Army constructed the homestay, complete control and daily operations will be managed by the Garbyang community. This model encourages self-reliance, inclusivity, and long-term sustainability. The villagers are being trained to manage bookings, hospitality, and maintenance independently, ensuring that tourism growth translates directly into livelihood opportunities.

What Makes Garbyang Special

Garbyang is located on the right bank of the Kali River, which marks the India-Nepal border. Once an important Indo-Tibetan trade hub, it is now known for its beautiful wooden homes built by the Shauka and Rang-Shauka (Bhotia) communities. The architecture reflects intricate carvings and craftsmanship unique to the region.

The village also serves as a base for pilgrims heading to the sacred sites of Adi Kailash and Om Parvat. With the new motorable road from Dharchula to Lipulekh, Garbyang has become far more accessible while still retaining its untouched Himalayan charm. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, serene trails, and an authentic cultural experience rooted in the mountains.

Booking and Stay Details

The tent-based homestay offers travelers a comfortable and immersive experience. Each tent combines eco-friendly design with modern comfort while maintaining harmony with the natural surroundings. Bookings are handled directly by the Garbyang Village Committee, ensuring that the tourism income stays within the local economy.

The stay is priced at Rs 1,000 per person per night, inclusive of all meals. Guests can reserve their stay by contacting the committee at 9410734276, 7579811930, or 9596752645. The simplicity of the accommodation is balanced by its breathtaking views and warm village hospitality.

How to Reach Garbyang

Garbyang can be accessed by road from Dharchula, which lies about 25 kilometers away. The nearest major airport is Pantnagar, and the closest major railway station is Kathgodam. From either point, travelers can hire taxis or private vehicles to reach Dharchula and continue the journey toward Garbyang. The final stretch offers spectacular views of the Himalayas and the Kali River winding along the border.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Garbyang is from March to June and from September to October. These months offer clear skies, pleasant weather, and ideal conditions for trekking and sightseeing. Winter brings snow-clad beauty but limited accessibility, while the post-monsoon season transforms the valley into a lush green paradise.

A Step Toward Eco-Friendly Exploration

The Indian Army’s eco tent homestay in Garbyang is more than just accommodation — it’s a symbol of progress through partnership. By empowering locals and promoting eco-conscious travel, this initiative bridges the gap between national security, community welfare, and environmental stewardship.

As tourism in Uttarakhand continues to grow, projects like these highlight how responsible travel can nurture both nature and livelihoods.
