Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), India’s largest hospitality group, has signed a greenfield Taj hotel project on Chennai’s East Coast Road, marking a major step in its continued expansion across Tamil Nadu. The development, in partnership with MGM Healthcare, will span 13 acres of pristine beachfront land overlooking the Bay of Bengal.

The 151-key luxury hotel, named Taj ECR Chennai, is being designed as a contemporary destination that blends relaxation, wellness, and corporate convenience. The resort will feature an all-day dining restaurant, two specialty venues, a chic bar, and Taj’s signature J Wellness Circle for rejuvenation. Guests can also enjoy a modern fitness centre, an expansive swimming pool, and a range of leisure activities suitable for families and business travellers alike.

Redefining Chennai’s Hospitality Landscape

The new Taj hotel aims to strengthen Chennai’s position as both a business and leisure hub. Catering to the city’s thriving Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) segment, the property will include two large banquet venues of approximately 10,000 and 5,300 square feet, along with smaller meeting spaces and oceanfront lawns. These facilities will make the resort one of Chennai’s most desirable destinations for weddings, conferences, and private gatherings.

Suma Venkatesh, Executive Vice President – Real Estate and Development, IHCL, shared, “Chennai’s hospitality sector continues to evolve alongside its growing corporate and cultural appeal. The signing of this new Taj hotel on ECR is a strategic move to capture multi-segment demand while reinforcing our presence in South India. We are delighted to collaborate with MGM Healthcare for this landmark project.”

M K Rajagopalan, Chairman of MGM Healthcare, added, “Our collaboration with IHCL represents a shared commitment to excellence. Together, we aim to deliver a world-class experience that reflects Chennai’s dynamic spirit.”

Blending Culture, Business, and Coastal Luxury

Chennai remains one of India’s most vibrant cultural and business centres. With heritage landmarks like Fort St George, the ancient temples of Mahabalipuram, and the renowned Marina Beach, the city attracts a blend of domestic and international visitors year-round.

The addition of Taj ECR Chennai will bring IHCL’s portfolio in the city to sixteen hotels, including six currently under development. This expansion reinforces IHCL’s long-term commitment to Tamil Nadu and its strategy to grow across high-demand leisure and metropolitan destinations in India.

IHCL’s Vision for the Future

With a growing presence across major Indian cities and tourist hubs, IHCL continues to lead the luxury hospitality sector through its Taj, SeleQtions, and Vivanta brands. The Chennai ECR property represents the company’s forward-looking approach to hospitality — one that seamlessly combines innovation, design, and local culture to create extraordinary guest experiences.
