Adani Enterprises, the flagship firm of the Adani Group, has bagged a landmark contract to construct a nearly 13-kilometre ropeway project connecting Sonprayag and Kedarnath in Uttarakhand. The project is part of the National Ropeways Development Programme – Parvatmala Pariyojana – and aims to make one of India’s most challenging pilgrimages smoother and more accessible for lakhs of devotees every year.
A milestone in spiritual connectivity
Sonprayag serves as the last point accessible by road for pilgrims en route to Kedarnath Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and among India’s most sacred Hindu shrines. Traditionally, devotees have had to undertake a steep 16-kilometre uphill trek or rely on ponies, palanquins, and helicopters to reach the temple.
The upcoming ropeway, spanning 12.9 kilometres, will drastically transform this experience. Once operational, it will reduce the travel time from a strenuous 9-hour journey to just 36 minutes. Capable of transporting up to 1,800 passengers per hour in each direction, the system will offer an efficient and eco-friendly mode of transport through the mountainous terrain.
Advanced technology and execution
Adani Enterprises’ Roads, Metro, Rail, and Water division will execute the project under a Public-Private Partnership model. The ropeway is expected to be developed using Tri-Cable Detachable Gondola (3S) technology, one of the most advanced systems in the world. This design ensures high capacity, stability, and resilience against strong winds, making it ideal for the Himalayan landscape.
The project, estimated at around ₹4,081 crore, will take approximately six years to complete. Once finished, Adani Enterprises will operate the ropeway for 29 years, ensuring sustained quality, maintenance, and service.
A vision of accessibility and growth
Kedarnath attracts nearly 20 lakh pilgrims each year, and this project is expected to significantly enhance the spiritual tourism infrastructure of Uttarakhand. By improving accessibility, it will also create job opportunities and promote regional development in and around Rudraprayag district.
“The Kedarnath ropeway is more than an engineering project—it is a bridge between devotion and modern infrastructure,” said Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group. “By making this sacred journey safer, faster, and more accessible, we honour the faith of millions while creating opportunities for the people of Uttarakhand.”
Boost to tourism and sustainability
The Sonprayag-Kedarnath ropeway will not only cater to pilgrims but will also boost eco-tourism in the region. Designed with minimal environmental impact, the ropeway aligns with India’s vision of sustainable infrastructure that respects nature while empowering communities.
Once operational, this world-class ropeway will stand as a symbol of modern engineering meeting spiritual tradition, reaffirming Uttarakhand’s position as the gateway to India’s most revered pilgrimage destinations.
