Andaman and Nicobar Islands will stage an Island Trekking Festival at Mount Manipur to promote eco adventure tourism, spotlight local heritage, and inspire youth to pursue guiding careers.

A festival with purpose

Organized by the Tourism Department with support from the Environment and Forests Department and MY Bharat, the event will cap participation at fifty for the first batch, prioritizing local youth, trekkers, tour operators, and visitors. Selected participants will receive certification from the tourism authority.

Why Mount Manipur resonates

Formerly called Mount Harriet, Mount Manipur is among the most scenic routes in South Andaman and carries powerful historical memory. During the Anglo Manipur war of eighteen ninety one, Maharaja Kulachandra Singh and fellow freedom fighters were exiled here. In twenty twenty one, the peak was renamed to honor that legacy.

Building sustainable skills

Beyond the trek, the program aims to kindle livelihoods through eco guiding and adventure guiding. It reflects a broader vision of Andaman tourism that aligns conservation, community, and visitor experience while easing pressure on fragile ecosystems.

What participants can expect

Trails with sweeping island views, interpretation of local nature and history, and guidance on safety and responsible trekking. The festival intends to return in future editions with expanded slots while preserving quality and minimal impact.
