Train journeys in India just got a lot safer without becoming more expensive. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently confirmed that passengers booking their train tickets online can now opt for travel insurance at a cost of just 45 paisa per passenger. This nominal premium covers accidents and emergencies during the trip, making it one of the most affordable insurance schemes available in the country.
The initiative, known as the Optional Travel Insurance Scheme, is available exclusively for passengers who book their tickets through the IRCTC website or mobile app. Whether you are travelling with a confirmed or RAC status, you can opt for this scheme by simply checking a box during the booking process. The best part is that it requires no extra paperwork or additional steps, making the experience completely hassle-free.
Once the booking is confirmed and the 45 paisa premium is paid, passengers receive their insurance policy details via SMS and email. These messages are sent directly by the insurance company and include a link to file nomination details and initiate any claims if required. The insurance provider is fully responsible for handling all policy-related communication and claim settlements.
According to the Railway Minister, this travel insurance scheme has proven to be more than just symbolic. Over the past five years, 333 claims have been successfully settled, with a total payout of over 27 crore rupees to passengers or their families. This demonstrates not only the utility of the scheme but also the efficiency of the claim process managed by partner insurers.
Mr. Vaishnaw highlighted that the scheme is a completely voluntary choice. Passengers are free to opt in or out based on their preferences, and the process of doing so is as easy as checking or unchecking a box while booking. There is no need for physical forms, ID submissions, or extra steps at the time of purchase.
The insurance scheme offers coverage for accidental injuries or unfortunate incidents during travel. It provides financial security and peace of mind to millions of Indians who travel by train every day. With more people choosing to book tickets online, the initiative is expected to reach a broader base of passengers and offer protection to those who might otherwise skip insurance due to cost or complexity.
At just 45 paisa, this optional travel insurance is one of the most affordable safeguards available to Indian railway passengers. As train travel continues to be the preferred mode of transportation for millions, this scheme represents a smart and sensible way to add a layer of protection to your journey.
