Saudi Arabia has announced a significant update to its Umrah visa policy, extending the validity period to three months from the date of issuance. This adjustment comes just as the pilgrimage season approaches, affecting those planning to visit Mecca for the Umrah pilgrimage.

Details on Visa Validity and Requirements

According to the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, the updated Umrah visa now remains valid for 90 days from its issue date, rather than starting upon entry into the country as previously stipulated. This change is intended to better prepare for the upcoming Hajj season, scheduled for June 14–19. Unlike the tourist visa, a multiple-entry visa also valid for 90 days, the Umrah visa is strictly a single-entry visa.

Regulations and Restrictions

Travelers must understand that the Umrah visa strictly prohibits employment or other non-pilgrimage activities while in the country. The Ministry emphasizes the importance of adhering to these rules, urging visitors to use the visa only for pilgrimage purposes and to ensure they exit Saudi Arabia before the visa's expiration.

Understanding Hajj and Umrah

While both Hajj and Umrah are Islamic pilgrimages, they are distinct in their religious significance and timing. Hajj is a mandatory pilgrimage that should be performed at least once in a lifetime by all able Muslims and is confined to specific dates in the Islamic lunar calendar. This year, it runs from June 14 to June 19. On the other hand, Umrah can be undertaken at any time during the year. Although the tourist eVisa permits participation in Umrah, it does not apply to Hajj, which requires a specific Hajj visa. The deadline for Hajj visa applications is April 29 for the year 2024.

Visa Application Recommendations

Travelers planning to undertake the Umrah pilgrimage are advised to apply early under the new regulations to ensure compliance and smooth entry into Saudi Arabia for their spiritual journey.
