In a recent update from the Turkish Embassy in New Delhi, a new travel mandate has been announced for Indian and Nepalese passport holders flying through Istanbul Airport to destinations like Mexico, Colombia, Panama, and Venezuela. Starting April 15, 2024, travelers must obtain an Electronic Airport Transit Visa (e-ATV) when transiting through Istanbul.

Official Announcement and Visa Application Details

The announcement, shared on the social media platform X, highlights that this requirement is specifically for Indian and Nepalese nationals. Those affected can apply for the e-ATV at no cost starting from the specified date via 'evisa.gov.tr', in line with the existing visa application protocols.

Document Verification and Compliance

Travelers need to carry a printed copy of their e-ATV during their journey. Airlines and service providers at departure airports will check these documents as part of standard international aviation regulation compliance. Further, Turkish authorities will conduct additional inspections at visa checkpoints in the transit passenger arrival area of Istanbul Airport.

Purposes Behind the e-ATV Implementation

The implementation of the e-ATV aims to simplify the transit process and maintain high standards in international aviation security. Travelers are encouraged to secure their e-ATVs in advance through the designated online portal and to carry the printout with them throughout their journey, ensuring a smoother transit experience.

Context of the New Visa Regulation

This regulation comes as part of Turkey’s broader efforts to manage irregular migration and enhance security. The country is a significant transit and destination point in global migration patterns, with increasing numbers of migrants using air travel via Turkey to reach North America. This move reflects Turkey's commitment to enforcing stricter migration controls and adhering to international aviation protocols.

Process for Obtaining the e-ATV

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has streamlined the e-visa application process. Travelers can apply for airport transit visas at no cost through the ministry’s website, where they must provide detailed personal information, residential addresses, and ticket numbers to initiate their applications.

For travelers planning to transit through Istanbul to select South American destinations, securing an e-ATV is now an essential part of trip preparations. This proactive measure is designed to ensure compliance with international standards and to facilitate hassle-free transit for all affected passengers.
