Portugal's government has announced a major change in its immigration policy. Under the new rules, most foreigners must get a work visa before arriving in Portugal. This marks a shift from the current system where people can enter on a tourist visa and then apply for a residence permit after finding a job.

Government Announcement

Presidency Minister Antonio Leitao Amaro shared the news during a press conference near Lisbon. He explained that the new rules aim to ensure controlled immigration. Without proper regulations, immigrants may face uncertain and difficult conditions.

Reasons for the Change

Rise in Foreign Residents

The new policy responds to the sharp increase in foreign residents in Portugal. Government data shows a 33% rise in 2023, with the foreign population reaching one million, making up about 10% of the total population.

New Visa Priorities

The government plans to prioritize visas for people from Portuguese-speaking countries, students, and highly skilled workers. Immigrants from countries like India, Nepal, and Bangladesh will likely be the most affected by these changes.

Addressing Pending Applications

To handle the 400,000 pending regularization applications, the government will hire more staff and set up a special task force.
