Stricter Checks at Kerala Airports

Several passengers from Kottayam and Idukki districts in Kerala were detained at UAE airports due to inadequate travel documentation. Inspections have also started at Kochi and Kozhikode airports in Kerala. At Cochin International Airport, over 20 passengers were recently barred from boarding flights. Similarly, up to five individuals are denied travel daily at Calicut International Airport, causing many to cancel their plans.

Airline Regulations and Requirements

Airlines are strictly enforcing regulations that require tourist visa holders to have hotel reservation documents and funds of 5,000 dirhams (about INR 1.3 lakh) for expenses. Many passengers arriving with only a visa and air tickets were refused travel even after providing contact information and addresses of relatives or friends in the UAE. Those whose trips were cancelled received no refunds or opportunities to reschedule.

Financial Proof and Documentation

An airline official stated that they received directives about needing hotel booking documents and a financial buffer of 5,000 dirhams, in addition to visas and return tickets. Guidelines stipulate that airlines will be held accountable for passengers lacking proper documentation upon arrival in the UAE, with fines of 5,000 dirhams per passenger imposed. Passengers are required to carry or have access to 3,000 dirhams (approximately INR 68,000) for a one-month visa and 5,000 dirhams for a longer stay. Credit cards meeting these limits are also accepted.
