Recently, there has been a significant drop in the number of Indian tourists visiting the Maldives, with a 42.2% decrease in the first four months of this year compared to the same period last year. This decline has led to India slipping to the sixth position among the Maldives' tourist source markets.

Reasons for the Decline

The decrease seems linked to diplomatic strains between India and the Maldives, which started after some Maldivian officials negatively commented about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In response, India initiated a campaign advising its citizens against travelling to the Maldives. This situation has notably affected the traditional flow of tourists from India to the Maldives.
