For the first time, a royal Bengal tiger has been photographed in the Yali forest, which is about 25 kilometers from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. This is a big achievement for wildlife conservation in the area.
How the Photos Were Captured
The images were taken using trap cameras. This was part of a joint project by the Sikkim Forest and Environment Department and the Global Tiger Forum (GTF). The goal is to monitor and protect tiger populations.
Previous Tiger Sighting
In December 2023, a tiger was also seen at the Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary in Sikkim. This shows that tigers are present in the region.

Conservation Program
The GTF is running the "Integrated Tiger Habitat Conservation Programme" in Sikkim. This program is supported by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and funded by German Cooperation through KfW Development Bank. The program aims to address the declining tiger population caused by human activities, forest fragmentation, poaching, and illegal trade.
Importance of Sikkim for Tigers
Sikkim is a key area for tigers in the Eastern Himalayas. Conservation efforts are crucial to preserve the genetic diversity and long-term survival of tigers and their prey. The project covers several protected areas, including Khangchendzonga National Park, Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, and Pangolakha, among others.
Project Goals
The project aims to:
- Set up and standardize methods for monitoring and researching tigers.
- Reduce conflicts between humans and wildlife.
- Increase income for local communities.
- Strengthen the capacity of institutions.
- Keep effective monitoring and patrolling to protect the environment.
Training for Conservation
The GTF will provide tiger-specific training to at least 100 forest officials and frontline staff. This will improve conservation efforts. The project will also focus on assessing and monitoring species and their habitats, including important wildlife corridors in Sikkim and along the Sikkim-Bengal and Sikkim-Bhutan borders.
Significance of the Sighting
This historic sighting in Yali forest highlights the importance of ongoing conservation efforts. It shows the need for continued work to ensure the survival of tigers in the region.
Good News from Uttarakhand
In another positive development, a tigress that was moved from Corbett Tiger Reserve to Rajaji Tiger Reserve in Uttarakhand has given birth to four cubs. These cubs were also captured by trap cameras.
