The European Union has launched a new 'cascade' visa scheme for Indian citizens. This initiative allows for multiple-entry visas with extended validity, aiming to streamline the visa application process for frequent travellers from India.

Details of the 'Cascade' Scheme

Under this scheme, Indian nationals can now easily obtain visas that permit multiple entries over longer periods. For instance, a two-year visa is available to those who have used two visas within the past three years without any issues. Eligible individuals can eventually apply for a five-year visa, provided their passport remains valid.

Benefits of the New Rules

These changes reflect the EU's intention to foster stronger relations with India by promoting easier travel for tourism, business, and cultural exchanges. The new rules are more favourable compared to the standard Visa Code previously in effect.

Travel Rights Under the New Visa

Holders of these new visas will have travel rights similar to those of visa-exempt nationals, allowing them to enter and exit the Schengen area multiple times throughout the visa's validity without needing additional visas.

Broader Implications

This visa policy is part of the broader EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, which seeks to enhance mutual cooperation on migration issues. The agenda emphasizes the importance of people-to-people contacts and acknowledges India's significant role as a strategic partner.

Overview of Schengen Area

The Schengen area encompasses 29 European countries, allowing visa holders to travel freely within this zone for short stays (up to 90 days within any 180-day period). The visa does not, however, permit holders to work in these countries.
