In February 2024, the Core Geo Expedition team uncovered rare fossils in Meghalaya's remote Gongdap village, near Tolegre. Estimated to be 30–40 million years old, these fossils were found in a cave system about 10 kilometers from Siju town.
Research and Findings
The Geological Survey of India (GSI) is currently analyzing these fossils to determine their precise age and identify the species. Preliminary estimates suggest they are between 35 and 40 million years old. The fossils might belong to extinct whale ancestors like Rhodocetus or Ambulocetus.

Expedition Challenges
The team, including Tudor Tamas, Milton Sangma, and Salban Manda, navigated over 9 kilometers of underground passages to reach the discovery site. They have urged quick study to protect the fossils from weathering and human threats before the monsoon season.
Significance and Urgency
The discovery holds crucial scientific value, potentially being the first of its kind in India. The expedition team is calling for immediate action from the Meghalayan government to safeguard and further investigate these fossils.
