The Great Lakes of Kashmir (GLK) trek has always been on the bucket list of experienced trekkers. Arguably the prettiest trek in India, it encompasses a trail that passes by seven alpine lakes in Kashmir, glittering emerald green pools guarded by forbidding mountain crags adorned with sparkling snowfields. No wonder proud Kashmiris are happy to hear their state is called the Switzerland of India!
Why should you do the trek?
sourceBesides the attraction of the lakes, Kashmir boasts of breathtaking views. However, the fear about India’s most politically troubled state still looms large in the minds of travellers. Kashmir is now firmly under military control and indefinite central rule, which makes it a haven. Recently, the G20 summit was held in the state which has urged authorities to upkeep roads and other famous locales. Packs of avid young trekkers can now head to the Kashmir Himalayas, with trail budget operators like Trek De Himalaya and Cliffhangers, which have commoditised the whole experience. Trekkers can also take the services of exclusive mountain adventure groups like White Magic, one of India’s best and ecologically conscious adventure travel companies. With the hordes arriving every day, the devastating impact of mass tourism on the fragile mountain environment can be harmful.
