Travelers flying out of Delhi this week are being urged to take extra precautions as heavy rainfall continues to batter the capital. On July 14, Delhi Airport issued a formal advisory for all passengers, asking them to plan their journeys in advance, check for real-time flight updates, and avoid road traffic disruptions by opting for alternative transport like the Delhi Metro.

After a weekend of continuous rainfall and strong gusty winds, the city’s roads have faced major waterlogging and slow traffic across several key areas. The India Meteorological Department has forecast more rain across Delhi NCR, with moderate to heavy showers expected throughout Monday. On-ground airport teams have confirmed that they are actively working with multiple departments to minimize the impact on airport operations.

The advisory follows Sunday’s chaotic conditions where wind speeds reached up to 60 kilometres per hour, making road travel slow and uncertain. Commuters faced delayed cab services, congested routes, and flooded streets especially in areas like Dhaula Kuan, Lajpat Nagar, and parts of Central Delhi. With a fresh bout of rain on Monday morning, similar conditions are expected to continue across several parts of the city.

Delhi’s unpredictable weather is being triggered by a combination of climate factors. Meteorologists are tracking a low-pressure zone over northwest Madhya Pradesh, along with a monsoon trough shifting south of Delhi and an active western disturbance. This convergence of systems has led to intense localized rainstorms across the region.

From June 1 to July 12, Delhi has received 117.8 millimetres of rainfall, bringing the season’s average closer to normal. However, there is a stark variation in how different parts of the city are being affected. While South and Southwest Delhi have recorded large excess rainfall, areas like North and Northwest Delhi are still in deficit. The districts of Central Delhi and New Delhi are showing near-normal monsoon patterns.

For travelers, the immediate concern is flight schedules. While there have not been widespread cancellations, several departures have reported delays due to low visibility and stormy conditions. Passengers are advised to arrive at the airport earlier than usual and keep a close watch on airline updates.

Delhi Metro has emerged as the most reliable mode of airport transport during this weather, offering uninterrupted service even during peak rain hours. The airport’s advisory recommends using the Metro over road travel whenever possible to avoid the risk of missing flights.

The current situation also highlights the growing need for better monsoon preparedness in Delhi’s transport infrastructure. Waterlogging and traffic breakdowns have become routine every year, especially during active monsoon periods. For now, the best approach for residents and tourists alike is to stay updated with weather forecasts, give extra buffer time when commuting, and avoid non-essential road travel during heavy showers.

If you are flying in or out of Delhi this week, check with your airline before leaving home and keep a close eye on weather updates. The monsoon is far from over, and planning ahead will help ensure your travel plans go uninterrupted.
