Bengaluru is in for a wet and windy week as the India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert that will remain in place till July 26. The forecast includes spells of moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds, all triggered by a developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. This weather shift is expected to bring much-needed rain across Karnataka, but also adds the risk of waterlogging, traffic snarls, and disruption to everyday routines.

Over the past few days, parts of the city have already witnessed slowed traffic and water accumulation in low-lying areas. Key junctions like R P Road near Windsor Manor and Bhashyam Circle have reported heavy congestion due to rain-related delays. With the alert extended for five days, local authorities and commuters alike are preparing for more challenges in the coming week.

The IMD has also extended weather warnings to other parts of the state. While Bengaluru remains under a yellow alert, districts such as Uttar Kannada, Shivamogga, and Udupi have been placed on orange alert with expectations of intense rainfall. Coastal and low-lying regions have been advised to stay vigilant due to the heightened risk of flooding, particularly in areas with poor drainage systems or recent history of overflow.

In Bengaluru, residents should be ready for changing weather conditions throughout the day. Wind speeds may range between 40 to 50 kilometres per hour, increasing the risk of fallen trees or flying debris. It is advisable to secure loose outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall hours. The city’s familiar rush-hour traffic could worsen as waterlogged roads and reduced visibility slow movement across major routes.

The IMD has offered detailed forecasts for the next few days. Between July 22 and 25, Bengaluru will likely see generally cloudy skies with regular spells of moderate rain. Daytime temperatures will stay around 28 to 29 degrees Celsius, while nighttime temperatures will dip to a cooler 20 degrees. By the end of the forecast window on July 26 and 27, rainfall is expected to persist, with humidity levels remaining high and comfort levels fluctuating.

For daily life in the city, this means keeping umbrellas handy, dressing in quick-dry fabrics, and being prepared for delays whether you are driving, walking, or using public transport. With most of the week predicted to be wet, professionals, students, and delivery services may all need to adjust their schedules accordingly.

The good news is that these showers help recharge Bengaluru’s water table and bring some relief from the dry spells earlier in the season. However, without effective urban planning and drainage management, the rain often becomes more of a disruption than a benefit. Citizens are encouraged to avoid clogged roads, refrain from driving through flooded areas, and report fallen trees or dangerous infrastructure to local authorities when needed.

As Bengaluru transitions through this intense monsoon phase, being prepared and staying informed can make a big difference. While the skies might be grey, a little planning can go a long way in staying safe and dry over the coming days.
